Castel del Monte and the legend of the underground: check a document from 1757 that mentions them Castel del Monte and the legend of the underground passages: a document from 1757 mentions them

VideoAndria.com – also through the collaboration of the researcher Nicola Montepulciano – has spoken about the legendary underground areas of Castel del Monte on various occasions, underlining the unrealistic aspect of a hypothetical kilometer long tunnel that would connect the medieval building built by Frederick II to Andria , instead embracing the more credible hypothesis that this legend was born from the basement of the Palazzo Ducale , once a Norman castle and then reused to host Jolanda, one of the wives of the Swabian emperor (as reported in a previous study ). However, a controversial mention has appeared on the web:

We are referring to a testimony dating back to the 18th century and reported in the documents of the Royal Hearing of Trani dated 8 March 1757 , which transcribes the declarations of the accused Domenico Laini – a prisoner – who claimed to have discovered an “underground passage” of Castel del Monte , twelve miles away from Andria , characterized by the presence of ” 2 columns of ancient green, 6 others of porphyry, and 12 of white marble” . To verify what the prisoner declared, the task was entrusted to Francesco d’Aulilia . D’Aulilia, together with the rev. d., who was an engineer, later declared that he had found nothing of what Laini described. Today, these declarations have been digitized and reported online in the study ” Excavations of antiquities and protection practices in the Land of Bari in the eighteenth century ” (by researchers Fioriello and Mangiatordi , currently available online at the following link ). The rumors of these alleged underground passages – never confirmed by official scholars – therefore remain a mystery that has continued to manifest itself for centuries, ending up in the popular beliefs of the people of Andria and curiously handed down for generations in the historic center of Andria. Many readers will remember the in-depth analysis by Nicola Montepulciano , who listed various reasons why a secret underground tunnel represents an unlikely hypothesis , not only from the point of view of its construction but also from a journey that would have seen the lack of light and oxygen . What we know for sure is that in Andria there are underground cellars in the town centre:

Since 2010, VideoAndria.com has released exclusive images of that Underground Andria often mentioned but little or not at all documented, also revealing medieval arches under Piazza Sant’Agostino and the remains of the so-called ” cisternone located near via Castel del Monte , therefore beyond the walls . This, without considering the basements of Palazzo Ducale , the caves used as furnaces in the neighborhood of the same name (protagonists of an exciting documentary published on our site and created with Montepulciano ) and the basements of Piazza Catuma , where, during excavations conducted a few years ago as part of the renovation of the square, ancient ceramics were found . In this regard, we remind you that it is possible to follow all the news dedicated to the history of the area also on Facebook by clicking “like” on the Facebook.com/andriantica page . Returning to Castel del Monte , the only underground artefacts – located in the pine forest surrounding the Federician manor – (of which the certain existence is known) consist of cisterns considered historically more recent than the castle, as confirmed years ago by the late prof. Martyrwomanduring an in-depth study by VideoAndria.com . The link to the video:
